Garrick shares an amazing story about an encounter with a father in Traninggrounds Center, New Orleans
During as educational event at Traininggrounds I observed a single Dad with three kids. One of them was an infant who was crying. I walked over to Dad and asked if he needed any assistance.Dad said, "Yeah!"
After a few minutes of general chat and observations about his lovely family, I had a chance to share some of my HUG Your Baby training with this father. I explained to Dad that his baby was in what we call, "the Rebooting Zone". This father looked over at me with an expression like "What's that." So I explained that that babies have a number of "Zones" or "States". The "Rebooting Zone" is when when the baby is on his way to, or really into crying.
As we observed his baby, we could see that the baby was changing colors (getting a bit redder in the face), his head was moving from left to right. his arms were swinging in the air, and both legs were kicking . This baby was really over stimulated!
I assured Dad that once we calm the baby down we can see if the baby is hungry or sleepy or just upset. I offered the Dad different techniques like swaddling, switching the baby's position like putting him up on the shoulder, or lowering the bright lights. I told him about the value of putting baby skin to skin (not just t-shirt to t-shirt) when he was home.
I let him know that i learned this information from the HUG Your Baby program which helps parents understand the language of the newborn. Dad seemed relieved to have this information and thanked me for the advice.
